Trust is everything

Hello everyone, my name is Fernando, I’m 48 years old and I’m from Amarante, a small but beautiful city in the North of Portugal. I work in the city of Porto, which is about 60 km away.

My interest in photography comes from a few years ago, when I bought a Sony NEX, using it casually, for personal purposes only. There was little motivation and it almost always resulted in photographs of walks, holidays and family gatherings.

Later, as a result of my professional activity, I started doing criminal photography and ended up not paying enough attention to the photography that I did in my spare time.
In 2017, after seeing the E-M10 Mark II in the hands of a family member and because I liked the portability and functions, I ended up buying the E-M10 Mark III with the kit lens.

In the meantime my son started playing handball and as the light in the pavilions is quite treacherous and unpredictable (school pavilions), after much research, I decided to purchase a second-hand lens, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 PRO.
Not very satisfied, in the winter of 2018, I sold the E-M10 Mark III and bought the E-M1 Mark II, and in January 2019 I bought the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO.
With this set, I easily delight my son and other handball colleagues who begin to share the photos on social networks. And a serious taste for sports and landscape photography begins to grow.

As I am a self-taught person, having no training in photography, I increasingly consumed the information available on social networks, and I ended up acquiring the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm F2.8 Macro and the M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm F2.8 PRO. Of course, Olympus Ambassadors also helped. New horizons were opening.

With this equipment, with the unrestrained consumption of information available on the internet, I dedicate myself to do more and more photography and taking advantage of all the free moments to go out, to enjoy nature and enjoy life. Of course, portability and ease of use, as well as the quality of images, elevate the pleasure of shooting.

It was natural that when the E-M1 Mark III was launched, after reading about the functions (USB charging, my menu, the joystick, image stabilization, the mode dial, Bluetooth, video AF with advanced focus), stabilization, handheld high-resolution shooting, live ND, Starry Sky AF, etc, etc.) I decided to make the pre-order.

Without a doubt, it was a good upgrade, so much so that I ended up starting to print my photos and filling the walls of my house.

As there is not much experience with other brands, Olympus largely fulfils my goals. It is a whole new world to explore, a learning curve that I believe has just started and a great pleasure to see photographs of other users with very high quality.

But I wanted more. I wanted to photograph wildlife that fills the Forest Park and the banks of the Tâmega River. With no chances of reaching to the M.Zuiko 300mm F4 IS PRO, let alone the new M.Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO, I chose to purchase in late November the M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS.

With tight professional commitments, it was only on the 1st of December that I could go out with the E-M1 Mark III and M.Zuiko 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS. The intention was to spend a few hours in the Forest Park and next to the Tâmega River that crosses Amarante, photograph some birds and learn to work with the lens.

So, at 08H00 on the 1st of December 2020 (a national holiday in Portugal), as soon as the morning fog lifted, I then moved to one of the places where I had already observed Blackbird (Cinclus cinclus), Heron (Ardea cinerea) and Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), in addition to other wildlife species.

As soon as I arrived, I immediately photographed a Heron, which, meanwhile, took off, and behold a Kingfisher passes in front of me, ending up on a branch of a tree located on an islet. As he was half-covered by other branches and the distance was still considerable, I decided to move through some rocks to reach another islet, which reduced the distance from Kingfisher to about half.

When I was moving, I ended up slipping on wet rocks, hit my knee on the rock and fall into the river. Needless to say, the camera and lens were in my hand. It was a complete bath for me, the equipment, the cell phone and the car keys.

I immediately got out of the water and returned home as fast as I could. When I fell into the water, I had the camera turned off, and I didn’t turn it on, I just opened the lens up to 400mm and took the equipment in my hand, facing down.

Was I worried?? A bit. In early October, during a hike to Santiago de Compostela, I walked a few kilometers under moderate rain, with the E-M1 Mark III and the M.Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8 PRO attached to the backpack strap. Both the camera and the lens got very wet, and I continued to shoot during The Camiño without any problem.
The point now is that there was a non-PRO lens attached to the camera, and it was not only rain, it was actually a dive, with the equipment being completely submerged, even if only for about 2 or 3 seconds.

When I got home, after using some paper napkins to remove the water from the surfaces, I left the equipment inside a room with the air conditioning on and dehumidifying. I decided not to remove the battery, not turning on the camera, keep the lens open, and also open the doors on both sides of the camera.

After about 12 hours I decided to pick up the set and turn it on, messed a bit with the controls and functions, and took some test pictures of the moon. Apparently, everything is in full working order.

The next day, again by the river. A few more photos and both the camera and the lens responded to what was asked. How wonderful.

If I already had confidence in Olympus equipment, without a doubt that it ended up being reinforced. With equipment of this quality, exchanging for another brand is out of the question.

Now, it’s all about continuing to learn, practice and having fun while I do photography, but this time away from the rocks and the river.

Confiança é tudo

Olá a todos, o meu nome é Fernando, tenho 48 anos e sou de Amarante, uma pequena, mas bela cidade do Norte de Portugal. Trabalho na cidade do Porto, que dista a cerca de 60 Km de distância.
O meu interessa pela fotografia vem de há alguns anos atrás, quando comprei uma Sony NEX, utilizada de forma moderada, para uso particular. A motivação não era muita e resultava quase sempre em fotografias de uns passeios, umas férias e de uns convívios familiares.
Posteriormente, fruto da minha actividade profissional, comecei a fazer fotografia criminal e acabei por deixar de prestar tanta atenção à fotografia que fazia nos meus tempos livres.
Em 2017, depois de ter visto a E-M10 Mak II nas mãos de um meu familiar e por ter gostado da portabilidade e ass funções, acabei por comprar a E-M10 MarK III com o kit de lentes.
Entretanto o meu filho começou a jogar andebol e como a luz nos pavilhões é bastante traiçoeira e imprevisível (pavilhões escolares), após muita pesquisa, optei por adquirir uma lente em 2.ª mão, a M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm 1:2.8 PRO.
Não muito satisfeito, no Inverno de 2018, vendi a M10 Mark III e compro a E-M1 Mark II. Em Janeiro de 2019 compro a M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm 1:2.8 PRO.
Com este conjunto, facilmente faço as delícias do meu filho e dos demais colegas do andebol que começam a partilhar as fotografias nas redes sociais e começa a crescer um sério gosto pela fotografia de desporto e de paisagem.
Como sou um autodidata, não tendo qualquer tipo de formação em fotografia, consumo cada vez mais informação disponível nas redes sociais, e acabo facilmente por adquirir a M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm F2.8 Macro e a M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm 1:2.8 PRO. É claro que os Embaixadores Olympus também ajudam. Novos horizontes se abriam.
Com estes equipamentos, com o consumo desenfreado de informação disponível na internet, vou-me dedicando e deliciando a fazer cada vez mais fotografia e a aproveitar todos os momentos livres para sair, para aproveitar a natureza e disfrutar da vida. Claro que a portabilidade e a facilidade de utilização, bem como a qualidade das imagens eleva o prazer de fotografar.
Foi com naturalidade que, quando foi lançada a E-M1 Mark III, após ler sobre as funções (carregamento via USB, o meu menu, o joystick, a estabilização da imagem, o selector de modo, Bluetooth, AF de vídeo com focagem avançada, a estabilização, disparo de alta resolução manual, o live ND, AF Céu estrelado, etc, etc..) decidi fazer a pré reserva.
Sem dúvida alguma que foi um bom upgrade, tanto que, acabei por começar a imprimir as minhas fotografias e a preencher as paredes da minha casa.
Não sendo grande a experiência com outras marcas, a Olympus preenche em larga medida os meus objectivos. É todo um mundo novo a explorar, uma curva de aprendizagem que considero que ainda agora começou e um gozo bestial ver fotografias de outros utilizadores com uma qualidade elevadíssima.
Mas eu queria mais. Queria fotografar vida selvagem que enche o Parque Florestal e as margens do Rio Tâmega. Sem hipóteses de chegar à M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm F4 IS PRO e muito menos à M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO, optei por adquirir no final de Novembro a M.Zuiko Digital ED 100 400mm F5.0-6.3 IS.
Com compromissos profissionais apertados, só no dia 1 de Dezembro é que consigo sair com a E-M1 Mark III e a M.Zuiko Digital ED 100 400mm F5.0-6.3 IS. O objectivo era passar umas horas no Parque Florestal e junto do Rio Tâmega que atravessa Amarante, fotografar algumas aves e aprender a trabalhar com a objectiva.
Assim, pelas 08H00 do 1 de Dezembro de 2020 (feriado nacional em Portugal), assim que o nevoeiro matinal levantou, desloquei-me então para um dos locais onde já tinha observado Melros de Água, Garças Reais e Guarda Rios, para além de outras espécies de vida selvagem.
Assim que cheguei fotografei de imediato uma Garça Real, que, entretanto, levantou voo, e eis que passa à minha frente um Guarda Rios, acabando por pousar num ramo de uma árvore localizada num ilhéu. Como ele estava meio tapado por outros ramos e a distância ainda era considerável, decidir deslocar-me e avançar por entre umas pedras para chegar a um outro ilhéu e que reduzia a distância do Guarda Rios para cerca de metade.
Eis que, na deslocação acabo por escorregar nas pedras húmidas, bato com o joelho na pedra e tombo para o rio. Escusado será dizer que tinha na mão a máquina e a objetiva. Foi banho completo para mim, para o equipamento, para o telemóvel e para as chaves do carro.
De imediato saí da água e regressei a casa o mais rápido que pude. Como quando caí à água, levava a máquina desligada, não a liguei, apenas abri a objectiva até aos 400mm e levei o equipamento na mão voltado para baixo.
Se eu estava preocupado?? Um bocado. No início de Outubro, durante uma caminhada a Santiago de Compostela, andei alguns Km debaixo de chuva moderada, com a E-M1 Mark III e a M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm 1:2.8 PRO presa à alça da mochila. Quer a máquina, quer a objectiva ficaram bastante molhadas, e continuei a fotografar durante O Caminho sem qualquer problema.
A questão agora, é que não tinha uma lente PRO colocada na máquina e não era chuva, foi mesmo um mergulho, com o equipamento a ficar completamente submerso, ainda que durante cerca de 2 ou 3 segundos.
Chegado a casa, depois de passar uns guardanapos de papel para retirar o excesso de água, deixei o equipamento no interior de um quarto com o ar condicionado ligado e a desumificar. Decidi não retirar a bateria, não ligar a máquina, manter a objectiva aberta e abrir as partes móveis que se encontram nas laterais esquerda e direita.
Ao fim de cerca de 12 horas decidi pegar no conjunto e liguei-o, mexi nos comandos, nas funções e fiz algumas fotografias à Lua e aparentemente estava tudo em pleno funcionamento.
No dia seguinte, novamente para junto do rio. Mais algumas fotografias e quer a máquina, quer a objectiva responderam ao que lhes foi solicitado. Que maravilha.
Se eu já tinha confiança nos equipamentos da Olympus, sem dúvida alguma que esta acabou por sair reforçada e com material desta qualidade, trocar por outra marca está fora de questão.
Agora é continuar a aprender, a praticar e a divertir-me enquanto faço fotografia, mas agora um bocado afastado das pedras e do rio.
